Online School Accreditation - Why is it Important?

When you are searching for a good online school there are many factors you need to consider. Some of them are obvious, like do they offer the program you want. Others you may not think about at first, such as is the school accredited.  It is important to attend a school that is accredited. Researching accreditation can give you your first hint about how valuable your education and degree will be coming from a specific school.

Many people are not clear on what accreditation is or why it is important. Basically for a school to become accredited they must go through an accreditation agency to be evaluated against pre-established educational standards. Becoming accredited is a voluntary process for a school. Accreditation is granted if the school is found to have good educational standards. Degrees and courses from schools without accreditation often will not transfer or even be considered legitimate by some schools and employers.

When you begin researching a school, look into their accreditation. The first step is to see if the school claims to be accredited. From there you need to check the qualifications of the accrediting agency. Don’t be afraid to ask the school for their qualifications, any school that is to be trusted should freely give you the information. There are no government controlled accreditation standards or agencies in the US. Instead the government regulates the accreditation agencies. This means that there are agencies out there that have not passed the government evaluation, but still call themselves accreditation agencies. Unfortunately some schools make up accreditation agencies in order to sound official when they’re really not. A good way to research accrediting agencies is by going to the US Department of Education website and viewing their listings of accrediting agencies.

Choosing an accredited school will give you an education and a degree that you can count on. Doing a little research can go a long way, and it will give you the peace of mind of knowing you’ve chosen a good school.
